Aston Villa vs Fulham Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday early evening (17:00) fixture is the Championship play-off final from Wembley Stadium.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa qualified for the final by finishing fourth in the table and then seeing off Middlesbrough 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-final.  They won the opening match 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium thanks to a Mile Jedinak goal and the second leg ended in a goalless draw which they are one game away from a return to the top flight.

Fulham booked their place at Wembley with a third-place finish and then a 2-1 aggregate defeat of Derby County after coming back from a one goal first-leg deficit.  The second leg at Craven Cottage saw them come out on top 2-0.

The two meetings between these sides last season were both won by the home team with their first meeting in October being won by Villa 2-1.  The Cottagers won their most recent battle 2-0 meaning it is honours even.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given their higher league finish and the way they ended the season Fulham are the favourites to win this game.  I respect that but at these prices it is Villa you must back. The gap between these sides was just five points over a whole season and that is if you throw in the fact that Villa did not really care about the last day it could have been as low as two.  Throw in that the Midlanders have a team with far more experience of Wembley and at these odds they need to be backed.

Both teams have a scored the bulk of their goals in the second-half (55% for Villa and 68% for Fulham) so backing the second-half to produce the most goals looks sensible especially considering the stakes at play.

Aston Villa Preview

The Midlands outfit are looking to return to the Premier League after two seasons in the second-tier of English football.  A remarkable 11 of their side have played at Wembley previously compared to just two for the Cottagers

Their recent form with just one defeat in their last seven and that came on the final day of the season in a meaningless fixture with Millwall.  On the road, they have wion two of their last three though just two of their last six.

Just one of the last seven Aston Villa have played have seen both teams score and five of them have gone under 1.5 goals.  Lewis Grabban has netted four times in his last six appearances for the second city outfit.

Aston Villa Team News

Ahmed Elmohamady (muscle), Neil Taylor (unknown), Andre Green (hamstring), Axel Tuanzebe, Gabby Agbonlahor, Jordan Lyden (all ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are all doubts.

Fulham Preview

The Cottagers are looking to return to the top flight after four seasons playing in the Championship.  They finished the season in third place and despite a remarkable run could not bridge the gap to automatic promotion.

They ended the season in remarkable form with just two defeats from their last 26 league matches.  On their travels, they lost their last two though were unbeaten in the 11 prior to that.

Ryan Sessegnon scored in the play-off semi-final and has two in three against Villa this season while Aleksandar Mitrovic has 12 in 19 appearances since his January loan move.  Around 68% of the goals Fulham have scored this season have come in the second-half with 52% in the final 30 minutes.

Fulham Team News

Sheyi Ojo (unknown) is their only doubt ahead of this fixture.
