Aston Villa vs Derby County Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is an important one at the top of the table as it features fourth at home to sixth.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa made it three straight victories as they defeated Ipswich at Portman Road in their last fixture.  It ended in a comprehensive 4-0 victory with a brace for Lewis Grabban and one each for Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury.

Derby put to an end a three-game losing run in midweek as they secured a home victory over Cardiff.  County won that encounter 3-1 thanks to a brace from Cameron Jerome and one from Matej Vydra.

The reverse fixture came in mid-December and it ended 2-0 to the Rams thanks to a goal each from Andreas Weimann and Johnny Russell.  It put to an end a five-match unbeaten head-to-head record Villa had.

Betting Tips and Predictions

A run of eight victories from their last ten home matches for Villa and defeats in their last two on the road for Derby suggests that the home side look the value call here in a straight to win the match bet.

Lewis Grabban has grabbed three in his last two appearance and is a streak player who when he is hot then gets his goals.  I like the look of the frontman to net at any time while backing two or more goals is also an option.

Aston Villa Preview

A run of three straight victories and four from their last five has not been enough for Villa who look unlikely to crack the top two.  They sit four behind Cardiff in second and three behind in Fulham in third with just two fixtures remaining.

At Villa Park, they have won eight of their last ten and lost just one of their last 14 and only twice the entire season.  The 41 home goals they have netted this season is the joint-second best record in the division.

In five of their last six the Midlands outfit have kept a clean sheet and they have the third best defensive record in the division.  Lewis Grabban has netted 19 Championship goal this season and has three in his last two appearances.

Aston Villa Team News

Alan Hutton (thigh), Andre Green (hamstring), Jonathan Kodjia, Axel Tuanzebe, Gabby Agbonlahor, John Terry and Jordan Lyden (all ankle) are doubts while Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) is a long-term absentee.

Derby County Preview

The Rams victory in midweek put to an end a three-game losing run and moved them back into the top six.  They sit in sixth place two points above Millwall in seventh with their two games remaining at Aston Villa and at home to Barnsley.

Away from the iPro Stadium, they have lost each of their last two and won just one of their last eight.  Just one of their last five and two of their last eight on the road have gone over 2.5 goals.

The 65 league goals that Derby have scored this season gives them the joint-sixth best attacking record in the Championship.  The 46 goals conceded they have conceded is the eighth best defensive record.

Derby County Team News

Ikechi Anya (calf), Kyle McAllister (groin) and Jonathan Mitchell (finger) are doubts while Sam Winnall (cruciate) is out for the season
