Aston Villa vs Bristol City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (17:30) features two sides in the promotion mix in the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Aston Villa got back to winning ways last time out as they defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium. Robert Snodgrass enabled them to take all three points in a game they were probably second-best in. Bristol City suffered a late loss to Wolves in their last game going down 2-1 at Ashton Gate to the leaders. The visitors had a player sent-off on the 14th minute meaning things looked good for the Robins and again they improved when they took the lead through Bobby Reid but then the were reduced to ten-men and the game swung around and they ended up losing 2-1. The reverse fixture between these sides came at the end of August and it ended in a 1-1 draw in Bristol. Jamie Paterson gave City a lead on the hour mark but they were pegged back four minutes later by Joshua Onomah and that was the end of the scoring.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Aston Villa have lost just one home game all season while Bristol City have lost just once on the road in the league which makes this a tough game to call. Given the last two at Villa Park have ended all-square and two of the last four on the road for the Robins have done the same the draw looks the most logical assumption but I would look elsewhere to find the best bets. City have netted 16 in their last nine on the road and Villa have netted two or more in five of their last eight on their own ground I am surprised to see over 2.5 goals the outsider of two here. In addition, both teams to score looks worth an interest here as it has paid in four of the last six at Villa Park and seven of the last eight at all grounds for Bristol City. As ever, these two markets can be combined into a double and I would not put anyone off doing so.

Aston Villa Preview

Victory last time out put to an end a run of five without a success and moved Villa into seventh place. They are level on points with Sheffield United in sixth and it will be interesting to see how they approach the January transfer window whether they invest or keep faith with the current large squad. At Villa Park, they are unbeaten in their last four though the last two have ended in a draw. The Midlands side have the joint-fourth best ranked home defence in the division but the attack is just in the mid-tier. Albert Adomah returned to the side last time out and he is their top-scorer with 11 goals this season. 12 of the 25 league games Aston Villa have played this season have been level going into the interval.

Aston Villa Team News

Joshua Onomah (knock), John Terry (broken toe), Andre Green, Chris Samba and Henri Lansbury (all hamstring), Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (both ankle) are doubts. Jonathan Kodjia (ankle) is out until March at the earliest.

Bristol City Preview

Defeat last time out put to an end a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions for the Robins. They have still though lost just two of their last 12 in the league and sit in third place just one behind the Rams in second. Away from Ashton Gate, it is 12 unbeaten and they have won five of their last seven on the road. They have scored the joint-third most goals on their travels in the league this season while their road defence is joint-second ranked. Each of the last six and 11 of their last 13 Bristol City league fixtures have seen two or three goals scored. City would be as low as 13th if the table was decided on half-time scorelines with just 16 of their 40 goals coming in the opening 15 minutes.

Bristol City Team News

Frank Fielding will miss the game through suspension following his red-card against Wolves. Gary O’Neil, Jens Heggeler, Ivan Lucic and Famara Diedhiou (all knee) are doubts while Milan Djuric (groin), Eros Pisano (hamstring) and Callum O’Dowda (ankle) are long-term absentees.
