Aston Villa vs Brighton & Hove Albion Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Villa have the better of the recent head-to-head records between the sides winning four and drawing two of the last six. The reverse fixture in November ended in a 1-1 draw with Nathan Baker giving the Midlands side the lead only for Glenn Murray to level for the South Coast outfit and ensure that the points were shared. Villa suffered their third defeat in four games as they went down 1-0 at Blackburn last time out in a game against a side fighting for their lives. Danny Graham got the only goal of the tie in which Villa struggled to match the passion of their rivals.

Brighton also went down to defeat in their last game going down 1-0 at home to Bristol City with a Josh Brownhill goal the difference between the two sides.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers make Brighton strong favourites for this game a result that will guarantee them the Championship title. I can’t be backing them at this price so instead will look at some of the other markets for my recommendations. Over 2.5 goals looks the way to play this game as both sides have nothing to gain by sitting back. Brighton will need to come out and play for the title while Villa will want to send their fans home happy and advertise why they should get season tickets for next season. These two sides have attacking talents and I think the over 2.5 goals looks worth a play as does a little interest in the game going over 3.5.

Aston Villa Preview

It is three defeats from the last four for Villa though they have been safe in mid-table for a number of weeks now. It has been a disappointing season for Villa but the blame of that is on previous manager Roberto di Matteo while current boss Steve Bruce must be supported in the summer as he looks to build a side capable of challenging for promotion next season. At Villa Park, form is good with six victories and just one defeat from their last seven. The Midlands outfit have the eighth best home record in the division this season and a feature of this is the fourth strongest defence in front of their own fans. A lack of goals has been an issue for Villa this season who have a league fourth worst goalscoring record. This should not be the same next season as along with 19 goal Jonathan Kodjia they also have Scott Hogan and midfield creators Henri Lansbury and Connor Hourihane. In six of their last seven home matches they have kept a clean sheet. Jonathan Kodjia has found the net six times in the last six home fixtures.

Aston Villa Team News

Mile Jedinak (groin), Jonathan Kodjia (ankle) and Andre Green (hamstring) are all doubts while Birkir Bjarnason (ligament), Jed Steer (Achilles), Libor Kozak (ankle) and Ritchie De Laet (ankle) are all unavailable for selection.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Since securing promotion it is two straight defeats for Brighton though they still are in pole-position in the race for the title as they sit one point above Newcastle. They have a weaker goal-difference than the Magpies so to secure the divisional title they would need to take all three points if Newcastle were to win their home game with Barnsley. It has been a mixed bag of results on the road for the Seagulls of late with four victories and four defeats and one solitary draw from their last nine. Only Newcastle have won more away ties than Brighton in the division this season. No side have a better defensive record than Brighton this season while they also have the fifth best attacking returns. Just three of their last 11 have seen both teams find the back of the net while this is just one of seven when looking at away ties. Anthony Knockaert has found the net three times in the last five away starts.

Brighton & Hove Albion Team News

Sam Baldock (back) could feature though Shane Duffy (broken foot) will play no part nor will Connor Goldson (heart).
