Aston Villa vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday lunchtime (12:00) game is live on SKYTV and is a Midlands derby between two sides needing points for different reasons. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa registered their sixth straight victory last time out though they had to work for it as they beat Burton 3-2. Scott Hogan, Albert Adomah and Jack Grealish got the goals that secured the three points. Birmingham were in FA Cup Fourth Round replay action in midweek going down 4-1 at home to Huddersfield after extra-time with Che Adams getting their goal. In the league, they continued their good run with a 3-1 defeat of Sunderland thanks to a Jota brace and one goal from David Davis. The reverse fixture came at the end of October and it ended in a goalless draw. It continued the head-to-head trend that has seen four of their last seven meetings end all-square.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Aston Villa are playing great stuff currently and are the favourites to win this game but I will not be backing them at those prices as I think Birmingham are also playing well and will not be easy to defeat here. Three of the last four at Villa Park has seen both teams score (including Burton and Barnsley) so a Blues side who have netted in their last five on their travels look capable of scoring here so take team both teams to score. Jota is a good player at this level and his brace in the last game could be a turning point. He looks a good play in the to score at any time market though I could not put you off backing him to score first also.

Aston Villa Preview

It is now six straight league victories for Steve Bruce and his side that has seen them climb up the table and are now in the automatic promotion mix. They sit in third place just one point behind Derby and two of their next three are against sides in the top eight. At Villa Park, they are unbeaten in their last seven winning five of these and each of their last three. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has happened in three of their last four in front of their own fans with just over 2.5 goals happening in all four. Scott Hogan is in good goalscoring form having netted five goals in his last five appearances for Aston Villa. Only Fulham (18) have scored more than the 14 they have netted in their last six matches.

Aston Villa Team News

Chris Samba (hamstring), Lewis Grabban (calf), Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (both ankle) are doubts while Jonathan Kodjia (also ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are long-term absentees.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues are in good form with four victories, one draw and just one defeat from their last six in the league. It has moved them up to 19th in the table and given them a four-point gap over the side (Hull) in third bottom. Away from St Andrew’s, it is four unbeaten with two victories and two draws from their last four. Seven of the 11 away goals the Midlands outfit have scored in the Championship this season have come in the last four fixtures. No side has scored a lower amount of Championship goals than Birmingham (22) though they are turning the corner here with six netted in their last two. Their last five in all competitions has seen both teams find the back of the net.

Birmingham City Team News

Jacques Maghoma and Tomas Kuszczak (both groin) are doubts while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) and Jonathan Grounds (ligaments) are long-term absentees.
