Aston Villa vs Barnsley Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon fixture (15:00) features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa continued their good league form with a third straight victory defeating Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground last time out. An 18th minute Scott Hogan goal was enough to help them take three points in a closely fought game.

Barnsley battled out a 0-0 draw at Oakwell with top-of-the-table Wolves in their last match. The Tykes were probably a little bit lucky to claim a point when looking at expected goals data but it confirmed a new found defensive resilience.

The reverse fixture came in the middle of September in Yorkshire with the Midlands outfit running out comfortable 3-0 victors. Albert Adomah grabbed a brace on that occasion (including one penalty) while Keinan Davis also got on the score sheet.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Villa should win the game but you will not get a lot of value on them to win the match. Barnsley showed against Wolves they are tricky to beat currently while not offering much going forward. The best option then is to split the stakes across a couple of correct scorelines with a 1-0 and 2-0 home victory making the most sense.

Aston Villa Preview

A run of three straight victories in the league has moved Villa up to fourth place and they were just five behind Derby in second ahead of the weekend action. With three of their next four at their own ground the Midlands outfit will hope to put some points on the board. At Villa Park, they are five games unbeaten winning three of these and drawing the other two. They have conceded just two times in their last four in front of their own fans with clean sheets in three of these.

As expected of Steve Bruce side their strength is in defence and they have conceded just 24 goals which is the third best record in the division. Around 55% of the goals they have scored this season have come in the first-half with 33% in the opening 30 minutes.

Aston Villa Team News

Chris Samba (hamstring), Mile Jedinak (shoulder), Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (both ankle) are doubts while Jonathan Kodjia (also ankle) is a long-term absentee.

Barnsley Preview

A useful point at home to Wolves last time out means it is now four unbeaten for the Tykes with three of these ending in a draw. They have slowly climbed into 19th place though each of their next four are against sides above them.

Away from Oakwell, they have won just one of their last five though they have also lost just three of their last nine. They have scored just three goals from their last five fixtures on the road.

Goals are scarce in Barnsley matches with their last four producing a total of three goals with the Tykes having netted two of them. Just one of their last six has gone over 2.5 goals while just three of their last 11 have seen both teams score.

Barnsley Team News

Ryan Hedges (thigh) and Adam Jackson (knee)are doubts ahead of this game. Joe Williams will miss the game through suspension.
