Arsenal vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Arsenal face Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on 23/04/17 as two of the Premier League’s big guns square off for a place in the FA Cup Final. Arsenal returned to winning ways on Monday night, beating Middlesbrough 2-1 away from home. City were too strong for Southampton last weekend, coming away from their visit to the south coast with a 3-0 win. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

For both teams, this fixture represents a real opportunity to salvage something from what has ultimately been a disappointing season so far, failing to live up to pre-season expectations. Pep Guardiola has, in recent years, been in this situation more than Arsene Wenger, and I’m expecting Man City to have too much for Arsenal in this one.

Arsenal Preview

Arsenal were far from fluent at Middlesbrough on Monday night yet still came away from the Riverside with three points, as Arsene Wenger deployed a three-man defence for the first time since 1997. A moment of magic put the Gunners in front as Alexis Sanchez’s superb free-kick evaded Brad Guzan and found the back of the net. That ensured Arsenal were in front heading into half-time but they weren’t in front for too long, as Alvaro Negredo poked home Stewart Downing’s floated cross to restore parity for Boro. However, Arsenal stole the three points when Aaron Ramsey chested the ball down for Mesut Ozil, who managed to squeeze the ball past Guzan at his near post to help keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the top four. Given the turmoil and disruption surrounding Arsenal this season, it’s unlikely to be considered a successful season regardless of whether they are able to secure a place in the top four or not. They have enjoyed arguably one of the easiest routes to the semi-finals of the FA Cup in the competition’s history, facing two non-league sides in the last two rounds. Arsenal were unable to beat Manchester City in either of their two meetings in the Premier League earlier in the campaign, drawing 2-2 with them just three weeks ago and lost out 2-1 at the Etihad. With Arsene Wenger still yet to come clean on the decision he has made over his future, it remains unclear as to whether he views a potential FA Cup win as the perfect way to bow out or as vindication to continue in his role as manager.

Man City Preview

Manchester City made their quality tell away to Southampton last weekend, coming away from St. Mary’s with a 3-0 victory to consolidate their place in the top four. Vincent Kompany headed City in front ten minutes into the second half, a poignant moment for the City captain, for whom this was his first goal since August 2015 after another injury-plagued campaign for the Belgian. City turned on the style with a quickfire double, both of which were set up by Kevin de Bruyne, first with Leroy Sane slotting home De Bruyne’s square ball before the midfielder crossed for Sergio Aguero to head home his 11th goal in 11 games. For City, this was their first away win in over a month after taking just a point from their last two visits to opposition grounds in Arsenal and Chelsea. Eliminated early from the Champions League and League Cup, as well as fading early from the Premier League title race, this is the only remaining opportunity for Pep Guardiola to win silverware in his debut campaign in England. Guardiola is yet to go a season without winning a trophy as a manager and won’t want this to be the first occasion where he fails to get his hands on a cup. The criticism of City this season has been their defensive frailties, which makes the fact they have conceded just once in five games in this competition so far. Guardiola has visited once before as a manager with Barcelona, winning the 2011 Champions League Final 3-1 against Manchester United.
