Arsenal vs FC Cologne Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Arsenal will be looking to begin their Europa League adventure in a positive manner when they welcome FC Cologne at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night. Arsenal come into this tie on the back of a comfortable 3-0 home win over Bournemouth in the Premier League at the weekend thanks to a brace from Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette. On the contrary, FC Cologne lost 3-0 on the road at Augsburg last time out in the Bundesliga, despite the fact that they had an overwhelming 63% ball possession and 13 goalscoring opportunities. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although that Arsenal will probably play their Europa League games with the second squad, they still should have enough quality within their ranks to grab all three points in this one. Furthermore, Koln have been terrible in the Bundesliga so far this season and it seems that they are unable to score after the departure of their topscorer Anthony Modeste this summer.

Arsenal Preview

Arsenal did well to beat Chelsea on penalties in the FC Community Shield Final at the beginning of August, but their start to the new Premier League season has been disappointing once again. They have won two and lost two of the opening four league games, and the main reason for this poor run of form has been their poor back line. The Gunners have already conceded eight goals in four games in this early part of the new season, but they looked much better in their most recent 3-0 home win over Bournemouth. Wenger’s men finished only in 5th in the Premier League table last season to book their place into the Europa League group stage. This is their Europa League group stage debut, as their last appearance in this competition was the 2000 UEFA Cup final, which they lost on penalties at the hands of Galatasaray. Despite the recent struggle, Arsenal have enjoyed an excellent run of form on home soil over the past six months, having lost just two of their last 15 home games across all competitions, while winning ten. The Gunners’ record in 36 meetings with Bundesliga teams is 16 victories, six draws, and 14 defeats, but the most worrying fact is that they have lost five of their last seven home fixtures against German opponents.

Arsenal Team News

Francis Coquelin and Calum Chambers are both doubts, but Santiago Cazorla, Krystian Bielik and Gedion Zelalem are all missing through injury.

FC Cologne Preview

FC Cologne have endured a terrible run of form over the past two months, having won two of their last ten games across all competitions. They started the new Bundesliga campaign in a poor manner, registering defeats in each of the opening three league fixtures. Koln have been poor at both ends of the field in this early part of the season, conceding seven goals and scoring just once in three games. Koln are now back in Europe for the first time in 20 years, with their only previous group stage campaigns being in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. They don’t have pedigree in the Europa League and their recent away form hasn’t been that good. Cologne have only won five of their last 15 away games across all competitions and have suffered back-to-back defeats in both their Bundesliga trips this season. Head-to-head, Cologne have lost their both meetings with Arsenal across all competitions, conceding six goals in the process. Frederik Sorensen is the man who have scored Cologne’s sole game in this early part of the season, while the summer signing Jhon Cordoba is yet to find the back of the net.

FC Cologne Team News

Marius Laux and Artjoms Rudnevs are both doubts, but Marcel Risse and Milos Jojic are both back in training.
