Arsenal vs Chelsea Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Two of the biggest clubs in London will square off at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as the FA Cup reigning champions Arsenal will take on the Premier League defending champions Chelsea in the Community Shield. Arsenal enter the fray on the back of a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Sevilla in the Emirates Cup, while Chelsea were beaten 1-2 by Inter in the International Champions Cup. These two sides met at the end of last season at Wembley in the FA Cup Final, with Arsenal beating Chelsea 2-1 thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Chelsea have won four of the last six meetings with Arsenal across all competitions, including their recent 0-3 victory in the pre-season. Although that Chelsea are missing some key players for this clash, I’m still backing them to win their 5th Community Shield trophy here. They will still be likely to put a decent attacking line with the likes of Fabregas, Morata, Willian and Batshuayi, players that are more than capable of finding the back of the net.

Arsenal Preview

Arsenal have won the Community Shield 14 times before in their history and another triumph on Sunday will see them join Liverpool as the second most successful team in the match, behind Manchester United. The Gunners have won the previous two Community Shield appearances, beating the likes of Manchester City in 2014 and Chelsea in 2015. Arsenal have endured a mixed run of form in the pre-season, winning three, losing two and drawing once in their six friendlies. Actually, they lost 0-3 at the hands of Chelsea in a friendly fixture a fortnight ago before thrashing Benfica 5-2 in the opening fixture of the Emirates Cup. They lost 2-1 against Sevilla in their second Emirates Cup game, but the good news was that their summer arrival Alexandre Lacazette managed to score his second goal for the Gunners. Furthermore, Arsenal have won that pre-season trophy for the 5th time in nine years despite losing at the hands of Sevilla in the second game. In terms of transfers, Arsenal have sold goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to Juventus for €12.2m and have allowed their centre forward Yaya Sanogo to move to Toulouse on a free transfer. As for arrivals, Alexandre Lacazette has joined the Gunners from Lyon for a club record £52m fee on a five-year deal, while Sead Kolasinac came on a free transfer from Schalke 04. Lacazette has already scored twice in the pre-season and it will be hoped that his pace and finishing touch will cause the Blues some problems on Sunday. Head-to-head, Arsenal have only won two of their last six meetings with Chelsea, scoring just five goals in the process.

Arsenal Team News

Santiago Cazorla, Gedion Zelalem, Francis Coquelin and Gabriel Paulista are all missing through injury, while Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey are both doubts. However, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere are back back in training following their injuries.

Chelsea Preview

The Premier League reigning champions Chelsea, kicked off their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 0-3 win over the Gunners, but then they suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of Bayern Munich and Inter in the International Champions Cup. According to reports, Antonio Conte is unhappy with the lack of support in the transfer market, as he needs more depth in the squad in order to compete in both Champions League and Premier League football. Chelsea did well to bring in Antonio Rudiger from Roma for €35m, Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco for €40m and Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid for €65m. However, many people are struggling to understand Chelsea’s strange decisions regarding the departures of Nathan Ake to Bournemouth, Nathaniel Chalobah to Watford and the biggest one in the shape of Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United. Conte is aware that last season there was no European football to distract Chelsea from their title run, but this year they will be competing in the Champions League and they really need some more depth in the squad. Alvaro Morata has failed to impress so far and it seems that he needs more time to settle in, but the good news is that Michy Batshuayi netted a brace against Arsenal in their friendly fixture played in China a fortnight ago. Chelsea will be looking for their 5th Community Shield title, but the bad news is that Eden Hazard and Tiemoue Bakayoko are both expected to be on the sidelines through injury, while Pedro is a doubt following his pre-season injury.

Chelsea Team News

Eden Hazard, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Baba Rahman are both missing through injury, while Pedro is a doubt.
