APOEL Nicosia Preview

APOEL’s defence of their Cypriot First Division title has hardly commenced how they would’ve planned it at the start of the season, taking just four points from their opening three matches. Their frustrations were further compounded at the weekend after travelling away to bottom-of-the-table Aris, with is widely anticipated that it would be Apoel that came away with the three points. However, despite dominating possession throughout, they were unable to find the breakthrough as the strugglers held them to a 0-0 draw at home, leaving them six points off first-placed Anorthosis with a game in hand. Last season they won the division by four points, losing just two games on their way to the title but this could be a more difficult ask this time around. What’s for certain is they probably couldn’t have been given a tougher assignment in terms of their group in the Champions League, with it anticipated that they Cypriots will be the whipping boys of the group. However, they are unbeaten in their last seven Champions League home matches in playoff rounds, with their three home games this season seeing them win 7-0 on aggregate.

APOEL Nicosia Team News

Midfielder Georgios Efrem (shoulder) and Lorenzo Ebecilio (hamstring) are both set to miss out through injury.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Spurs may have made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves but eventually ran out 3-2 winners at West Ham after another match-winning performance from Harry Kane. The talismanic centre-forward scored twice in the first half with two simple, yet clinical finishes, before Christian Eriksen drilled in a third 15 minutes into the second period. However, Serge Aurier was sent off five minutes after Javier Hernandez poached a goal back for the hosts and when Cheikhou Kouyate powered in a header from close range, it really put pressure on Spurs in the closing minutes. They managed to hold on though to what was their fourth win in five games in all competitions, with this also making it six goals in five games for Kane during that time. Beating Borussia Dortmund at home in their Champions League opener could prove to be a huge result in the context of this group, with most expecting it to be between those two sides that compete for second place and progression alongside Real Madrid. To do so, though, beating Apoel both home and away will be critical, with there little margin for error in this game that they will be fully expected to win.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Both Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli are suspended for this clash, while Erik Lamela (hip) and Victor Wanyama (knee) are ruled out through injury. Danny Rose (knee) is closing in on a return to action.
