APOEL Nicosia vs Athletic Bilbao Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

APOEL Nicosia and Athletic Bilbao will square off at the Neo GSP on Thursday evening for the second leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. Athletic Bilbao controlled the first leg for large spells and looked confident at 3-1 up, but APOEL added their second goal with just one minute to go, changing the whole context of this two-legged tie. Georgios Efrem gave APOL the lead in the 36th minute, but an own-goal from their defender Giorgios Merkis levelled the game two minutes later. Bilbao started the second half much better, and they made it 2-1 just after the half-hour break through Aritz Aduriz, while Inaki Williams increased their lead 11 minutes later. However, Giannis Gianniotas pulled one back for APOEL in the 89th minute to give APOEL a real chance to qualify for the next stage of the competition. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

APOEL proved their efficiency in front of goal last week, and they looked very solid throughout their Europa League campaign this season. Furthermore, they have won all of their three Europa League home fixtures this season, conceding just one goal in the process. Overall, APOEL are undefeated in the last 16 home meetings in all competitions, conceding just seven goals in this term. This having been said, I’m backing APOEL to secure at least one draw in this one.

APOEL Nicosia Preview

The 3-2 defeat in Bilbao last week ended APOEL Nicosia’s 15-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Actually, that was their third defeat in their last seven Europa League fixtures. However, they somehow managed to finish on top of the group B table by a four-point margin. The good news is that APOEL are undefeated in six European home fixtures this season, winning five and drawing once in the process. Domestically, APOEL are very close to secure their third consecutive title in the First Division, as they find themselves on top of the league table with three points more than the 2nd-placed Apollon and with a game in hand. Their solid defence has been APOEL’s main reason for their performances throughout this First Division campaign, as they have conceded just 13 goals in 23 rounds so far this season. The First Division league is weak, but APOEL they are something of an exception to that, as they managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League only five years ago. They have also been a dominant force in the Europa League this season, and this is the first time when they are playing in the spring phase of a UEFA Cup/Europa League. Their home form over the past six months has been impeccable, as they have won 13 and draw 3 of their last 16 home fixtures in all competitions. In addition, they have won all of their three Europa League group home fixtures this season, conceding just once in this term.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

On the other hand, Bilbao were unable to follow up their 3-2 win over APOEL with another victory, as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat on the road at Valencia in La Liga at the weekend. Their form in this early part of the new year has been a complete mixed bag with three draws, three defeats and four wins in their ten games across all competitions after the winter break. Their away form has been the main reason for their struggled across all competitions throughout this 2016/2017 competitive season. The Basque side have only won three of their last 15 away games across all competitions, and are currently on a six-game winless streak. Furthermore, Bilbao are winless in their last three European away games this season, losing two and drawing once in the process. Domestically, Athletic Bilbao find themselves only in 8th position in the La Liga table tied on 35 points with the 7th-placed Eibar, just four points off the European places. Bilbao looked short going forward throughout this La Liga campaign, as they only managed 28 goals in 23 league outings. Aritz Aduriz has been their most dangerous player in front of goal so far this season, as he is leading the club’s goalscoring charts with 8 goals in his 20 league appearances.
