Angers vs Bordeaux Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Angers and Bordeaux will square off at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Sunday afternoon for the opening round of the new Ligue 1 season. Angers managed to beat Caen in a friendly fixture last weekend thanks to a penalty-goal from Thomas Mangani. Meanwhile, Bordeaux have been knocked out from the Europa League qualifying following a 1-0 away loss at Videoton in midweek. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m backing Angers to grab all three points in this one as their recent form has been impeccable while I’m expecting Bordeaux to struggle after their humiliating elimination from the Europa League in midweek. Furthermore, Angers have won four of their last five meetings with Bordeaux across all competitions, scoring at least two goals in three of these.

Angers Preview

Angers kicked off their pre-season in a disappointing manner, drawing 2-2 with Cholet and losing 0-2 at the hands of Orleans. However, Les Scoistes bounced back with four consecutive victories and the most interesting fact is that they have only conceded once in this term. Angers finished 12th in the standings last term, but they had an impressive run in the Coupe de France as they reached the final round where they only lost 0-1 against Paris Saint Germain, with their defender Issa Cissokho scoring an own-goal in the stoppage time. It’s pretty difficult to say if Angers are having a much better squad than last season after this summer transfer window, as they have sold Nicolas Pepe to Lille for €10m and Famara Diedhiou to Bristol City for €6m, while they brought in Enzo Crivelli, Lassana Coulibaly, Baptiste Guillaume and Angelo Fulgini for a total fee of €9.4 million. Famara Diedhiou has been Angers’ topscorer last term with eight goals under his belt, but the new arrival Enzo Crivelli managed to score 10 goals for his former team SC Bastia last season. At home, they have been up and down over the past seven months, as they were on an eight-game unbeaten streak between January to April, but then they have lost four of their last six competitive fixtures. The good news is that Angers are undefeated in their last two home meetings with Bordeaux, including a 2-1 win in the Coupe de France.

Angers Team News

Wilfried Kanga Aka and Loic Puyo are both out through injury, while Abdoulaye Bamba is a doubt.

Bordeaux Preview

No one expected Bordeaux to be eliminated from the Europa League qualifiers after their impeccable pre-season campaign and a first-leg victory. Les Girondins have won all of their four friendlies in the pre-season and followed this up with a 2-1 home victory over Videoton in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round a week ago. However, they were unable to maintain this advantage as they travelled to Hungary last night and conceded a first-half goal. Things got worse for Bordeaux, as Youssouf Sabaly was sent-off in the first minute of the second half following his second yellow card and despite the fact that the hosts also remained in ten men in the 69th minute, Bordeaux were unable to find the back of the net and to score the qualifying goal. The good news is that Bordeaux can now focus only on their domestic competitions, but it remains to be seen if they can move over their disappointing Europa League elimination and bounce back with a victory over Angers on Sunday. Head-to-head, Bordeaux are winless in their last five meetings with Angers across all competitions, losing four in the process. Furthermore, their away form over the past six months has been poor as they have only won three of their last ten away games across all competitions. In addition, Bordeaux have sold six players throughout the transfer window for a total fee of €22.5 million, while they only brought four new players in the shape of Youssouf Sabaly, Lukas Lerager, Vukasin Jovanovic and Alexandre Mendy for a total fee of €11.1 million.

Bordeaux Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Bordeaux ahead of this tie.
