Ajax Preview

Ajax have had a terrible start to the season, but they looked a little bit better over the past month and a half. The Amsterdammers have only lost once in their last six games across all competitions and head into this tie on the back of a comfortable 0-4 away win at SC Heerenveen prior to the International break. Their sole defeat in this term came at the hands of Vitesse towards the end of September, in a game in which they had an overwhelming 67% ball possession and 18 goalscoring opportunities. Due to their inconsistency in this early part of the campaign, Ajax find themselves only in 6th in the standings with 13 points to their name after seven rounds, already five points adrift of the current leaders and eternal rivals PSV Eindhoven. On home soil, Ajax have endured a mixed run of form over the past two months, registering two draws, two wins and two defeats in their last six home fixtures across all competitions. The good news is that Ajax are unbeaten in their ten home meetings with Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie, winning nine in the process. Furthermore, the Amsterdammers have scored at least two goals in nine of their last ten home games against the Rotterdammers.

Ajax Team News

Norbert Alblas, Abdelhak Nouri, Luis Manuel Orejuela, Mateusz Gorski and Mitchell Dijks are all doubts ahead of this clash.

Sparta Rotterdam Preview

Meanwhile, Sparta Rotterdam have only won once in their eight competitive fixtures so far this season and enter the fray on the back of a four-game losing streak. The most worrying thing is that Sparta have only scored once in their last four competitive games. Sparta only sit in 16th in the Eredivisie table at the moment in time with five points after seven rounds, just one point behind safety. Scoring goals has been Sparta’s biggest problem in this early part of the season as they hold the worst attacking record in the division with just five goals scored in seven games. Ragnar Ache and Robert Muhren have been Sparta’s most prolific players in front of goal so far this season, as the pair bagged four goals and one assist between them. The bad news is that Sparta Rotterdam are winless in the last six away games across all competitions and have failed to score in four of these. Furthermore, the Rotterdammers are winless in their ten visits to the Amsterdam ArenA, losing nine in the process. In addition, Sparta have conceded at least two goals in nine of their ten visits to the Amsterdam ArenA.

Sparta Rotterdam Team News

Janne Saksela is out through a cruciate ligament injury, but Paco Van Moorsel is a doubt.
