Ajax vs Schalke 04 Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Ajax will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak across all competitions to seven games when they welcome Schalke 04 at the Amsterdam Arena on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-finals tie. Ajax come into this clash on the back of a 1-5 victory on the road at NEC Nijmegen last time out in the Eredivisie. Bertrand Traore scored a brace, while two others goals from David Neres and Hakim Ziyech along with an own-goal from Wojciech Golla established the final score. Meanwhile, Schalke 04 won 4-1 at home over Wolfsburg last time out in the Bundesliga thanks to a brace from Guido Burgstaller and two other goals from Leon Goretzka and Daniel Caligiuri. Betting Predictions and Tips

Ajax should be able to pick up a positive result in this one as they have been incredibly strong on home soil over the past three months. The Amsterdammers are currently on an eight-game winning streak in all competitions, scoring at least two goals in seven of these. Furthermore, Ajax are undefeated in 11 European home fixtures this season, winning six and drawing five in the process. On the flip side, Schalke 04 have only won once in their last seven away games across all competitions, and have conceded at least two goals in five of their last six away competitive fixtures.

Ajax Preview

Ajax did well to beat NEC Nijmegen 1-5 at the weekend in the Eredivisie to extend their unbeaten run to 13 games. Ajax’s form over the past three months has seen them losing just once in their last 17 games across all competitions. That sole defeat came at the hands of FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie, but they managed to beat the Danish at home in the second leg to quality into this stage of the competition. Ajax still sit in second place in the Eredivisie table, but they are now just one point behind the current leaders Feyenoord after the Rotterdammers drew 2-2 with PEC Zwolle on Sunday. Ajax’s performances throughout this Eredivisie campaign was largely based on their solid defence, as they hold the best joint defensive record in the division with just 20 goals conceded in 30 rounds. Their recent home form has been impeccable, having won all of their last eight home fixtures across all competitions while conceding just three goals in this term. In addition, the Amsterdammers are undefeated in eleven European home games this season, registering six victories and five draws in the process. These two sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition, but Ajax hold an impressive home record against German opponents, having won 13 of their 15 games in Amsterdam. Kasper Dolberg has been Ajax’s most dangerous player throughout this European campaign, helping the team with four goals in his nine appearances. The 19-year-old striker has also enjoyed an impressive Eredivisie campaign, as he is leading the club’s goalscoring charts with 13 goals and five assists in his 25 league appearances.

Schalke 04 Preview

Meanwhile, Schalke 04 have finally returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga at the weekend thanks to an impressive 4-1 home victory over Wolfsburg. This leaves the Royal Blues in 6th position in the Bundesliga table, just four points off the European places. Schalke have endured a mixed run of form over the past month, registering four defeats, three draws and three victories in their last ten games across all competitions. During this run, Schalke managed to qualify for this stage of the Europa League due to the away goal rule following a 3-3 draw on aggregate against the Bundesliga fellows Borussia Moenchengladbach. Despite their mixed form throughout this Bundesliga campaign, Schalke still hold one of the best defensive records in the division with just 32 goals conceded in 28 league games. The bad news is that Schalke 04 have struggled for consistency on the road over the past two months, having won just once in their last seven away games across all competitions. The good news is that Schalke 04 have won three of their five Europa League away games this season. Schalke have reached the quarter-final of the Europa League back in 2011/12 season, but they were beaten 6-4 on aggregate by Athletic Bilbao. Guido Burgstaller and Nabil Bentaleb have been Schalke’s most dangerous players in front of goal throughout this Bundesliga campaign, as the pair bagged eleven goals and six assists between them.
