Ajax vs Nice Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Ajax and Nice will be facing each other at the Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday night, with both teams looking for a place in the Champions League play-offs. The first leg between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw, with Mario Balotelli opening the score for Nice just after the half-hour mark, but only to be cancelled by Donny van de Beek in the first three minutes of the second half. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m expecting another entertaining affair with goals at both ends of the field, and I’m also backing Ajax to maximize their home advantage and to win this second leg. They have been in control of the first-leg game as well, and I think they can secure a victory here, particularly because Nice will be without their last season’s top scorer Mario Balotelli.

Ajax Preview

Ajax’s recent form has been dreadful as they have only won once in their last four games across all competitions. The Amsterdammers had the better ball possession and looked more dangerous than Nice last week, but they only managed to secure a 1-1 draw. They followed this up with a 3-3 home draw against Hull City in a friendly fixture a few days ago, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scoring his first goal for the Amsterdammers since his return. Despite the first-leg result, Ajax can count on their home form ahead of this tie as they have only lost once in their last 15 home games across all competitions, winning 13 in the process. Ajax’s Champions League record over the past few years hasn’t been great as they have only won twice in their last nine games. However, they looked impressive in the Europa League last term as they managed to reach the final round where they were beaten by Manchester United. Kasper Dolberg has been Ajax’s most dangerous player in front of goal last season as he racked up 23 goals in all competitions, but the summer arrival Klaas-Jan Huntelaar seems to be in fine shape after his goal against Hull a few days ago.

Ajax Team News

Daley Sinkgraven is the only doubtful player for Ajax ahead of this game.

Nice Preview

On the contrary, Nice have enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign, losing just once in five friendlies. Mario Balotelli gave Nice the lead against Ajax just after the half-hour mark last week, but the visitors levelled the game after the break. Nice have never played in the Champions League before, but they definitely have enough quality within their ranks to reach the group stages. Nice competed in the Europa League group stage last season, but they finished on the bottom of the group I table, just one point behind the runner-ups Krasnodar. Nice’s away record over the past seven months has been a complete mixed bag with four defeats, four draws and six victories in their last 15 games across all competitions. Nice managed to keep their important players, at the club throughout this summer transfer window, and they also brought two decent midfielders in the shape of Jean-Victor Makengo and Pierre Lees Melou for a total fee of €9m. However, Nice can’t count on Mario Balotelli ahead of this clash as the former Liverpool and Manchester City striker is missing through a knee injury. The good news is that Alassane Plea is finally back after his long-term injury and he will be looking to continue his last season’s shape when he scored 11 goals in 25 Ligue 1 appearances.

Nice Team News

Mario balotelli and Wylan Cyprien are both missing through injury, while Mickael Le Bihan is a doubt.
