AEK Athens vs CSKA Moscow Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

AEK Athens FC and CSKA Moscow will square off at the Olympiako Stadio Spyros Louis on Tuesday evening for the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifying tie. AEK Athens head into this tie on the back of a 1-1 draw against Gent in a friendly fixture a few days ago. On the other hand, CSKA Moscow suffered a disappointing 1-3 home loss at the hands of city rivals Lokomotiv Moscow on Friday, with their consolation goal being scored by Vitinho. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

CSKA Moscow are slight favourites to win this game, but AEK Athens proved to be a strong side on home soil over the past seven months. Furthermore, AEK Athens have kept 13 clean sheets in their last 20 home games across all competitions, while CSKA have struggled to find the back of the net on the road recently. I’m not expecting a high-scoring game, but I think that AEK could secure at least a draw here.

AEK Athens Preview

AEK Athens haven’t played an official game since their 1-2 win over Panionios in the final Super League fixture two months ago. AEK finished on top of their Super League play-off group table with 12 points under their belts after six group fixtures. The Greeks looked solid in their pre-season campaign, as they beat Korona Kielce and Ostrava and drew against Gent in their most recent three friendlies. This means that AEK enter the fray on the back of a five-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, conceding just three goals in the process. AEK should feel confident ahead of this tie as their home form over the past eight months has been amazing. They have only lost three of their last 20 home fixtures across all competitions and have kept 13 clean sheets in this term. AEK haven’t played a Champions League qualifying fixture over the past ten years since a 1-6 aggregate defeat at the hands of Sevilla back in September 2007. AEK have struggled financially over the past few years and this was the main reason they got relegated from the Super League to the Football League for their first time in history at the ends of the 2013/14 campaign. However, this is a new era for AEK and they seem to be ready to make their long awaited return in the Champions League or Europa League group stages.

AEK Athens Team News

Vasilios Lampropoulos is the only injury absentee for AEK Athens ahead of this tie.

CSKA Moscow Preview

Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow finished as runners-up in the Russian Premier League last season, seven points off their eternal rivals Spartak Moscow. Their solid defence has been the main reason for their excellent performance last season as they had the best defensive record in the division with just 15 goals conceded in 30 rounds. CSKA have endured a mixed run of form in the pre-season, losing once, drawing once and winning twice in four friendlies. They kicked off the new Premier League campaign with a 1-3 win on the road at Anzhi Makhachkala, but got thrashed 1-3 at home by Lokomotiv Moscow at the weekend. On the road, CSKA have only lost twice in their last eleven away games across all competitions, while their most recent trip ended as a 1-3 win at Anzhi. Regarding their Champions League recent record, CSKA finished at the bottom of the group E table last season with just three points under their belts after six group fixtures. The bad news is that CSKA are winless in their last seven away games in the Champions League, scoring just five goals in this term. CSKA managed to beat PAOK 2-1 on aggregate in the 2010/11 Europa League round of 32 the last time when they played against a Greek side.

CSKA Moscow Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for CSKA ahead of this trip.
