Ups and downs of World Cups 1st round fixtures
Russia win 5-0 in opening game
This years FIFA World Cup hosts, Russia, go there campaign off to a flyer, smashing Saudi Arabia 5-0 to bag all three points and put them in a healthy position going into two tough ties against Egypt and Uruguay.
Saudi Arabia looked less than satisfying and would come as a shock to many if they were to even score a goal this tournament, let alone get a goal and some points.
Iran shock Morocco
Before the game, Morocco were favourites to win the game and for much of the match looked as if it was going to be a comfortable afternoon. However, the later into the game it got Iran started to create some chances and in the 94th minute, yes 94th!! They broke the deadlock and have not given themselves a sliver of hope they can progress out of the group, although they will have to take points off either Portugal or Spain to do so.
This has left Morocco with all but no hope of progressing, but will still want to enjoy two huge games with Spain and Portugal.
Portugal 3 Spain 3. WHAT A GAME!!
When Portugal and Spain were drawn in the same group, it was always going to set up to be an outstanding game with so much talent on show. The likes of Ronaldo, Iniesta, Costa, Ramos and many others went head to head in what turnt out to be a World Cup Classic.
It didn’t take long for the game's first goal to go in as Ronaldo went down in the box, won the pen and scored it. Spain then got back into the game half way through the first half but when Ronaldo scored 2 mins before half time, the game looked to have turned towards Portugal once again. As you would expect, Spain stayed calm and patient as Costa grabbed his second of the game to bring it level. It took an unreal strike from right back Nacho to give Spain the lead for the first time which looked as if it could have been the winner. Ronaldo had other ideas as he set the ball down for a free kick in the 88th minute and smashed it over the wall and into secure his nation a point. Can we have some more games like this please?
France Edge past Australia
Two penalties were given in this game which just added to the huge amounts given already this World Cup. One for France which was debatable, even after using VAR and then a second for Australia which made the game level.
France looked as if they were running out of idea’s and the game would run out for them to get the winner before Manchester United playmaker Paul Pogba chipped over the keeper to give them the win many expected. We think this France team could go a long way this summer.
Argentina and Brazil drop points
Argentina took on Iceland in Group D in a game they were fully expected to grab all three points from. But as Iceland showed England in 2016, they are not an easy side to beat and will not hide behind their shells when going behind.
They did go behind in the game through a Sergio Aguero goal, but a strong response from the side and a lot of heart brought them back level. Things looked to have taken a turn for the worse for Iceland as they gave away a penalty and with Messi behind it, it seemed only one outcome. However, the dentist goalkeeper saved the day and made sure Iceland would go back to base with a hard-earned point.
England snatch last gasp winner
England looked to play with a lot of swagger and confidence on Monday night as they looked to win their first game in a World Cup for just the third time in there history. Early pressure made it seem England would run away with this one and when Harry Kane smashed home early on, the goals should have kept rolling in. However, a run of poor misses from England star men opened the door for Tunisia.
Kyle Walker left his arm hanging inside the area as the Tunisia striker ran into it and went down and won a penalty, many feared the England centre half would be sent off but just a yellow was shown. Tunisia took there chance and scored the penalty which until the 90th minute seemed to be enough for a point.
England had a corner which was swung in, met my Harry Maguire and then finished off but that man Kane which set England fans all around the nation mental.
What a start to the World Cup it has been!! Long may it last.
