It wasn't the best performance from Aston Villa last night, but they eventually got the job done and that is what the history books will tell us when we look back. Despite taking a lead to The Hawthorns with them, and playing against 10 men for a good part of the second half, Aston Villa could not breach the West Brom back line and score the goal they needed to take the win.

West Brom were leading 1-0 before they had a player sent off, and that left the tie finely balanced at 2-2. The advantage firmly swung in the way of Aston Villa but they could not make that pay and the game went to extra time. West Brom were playing to hold on, nothing else, and that is exactly what they did, sending the game to penalties.

When penalties came, West Brom only had 10 men on the field, and six of those were defenders, so their choices were limited to say the least. Their first two penalties were saved which put them well behind the black ball, and they could not recover. They did take Villa down to the last penalty, but Tammy Abraham slotted home to send the Villa away end wild.

We will find out who Aston Villa will play tonight when Leeds host Derby in the other semi final. After winning their game last night, Aston Villa are already odds on to lift the trophy and make it to the Premier League. They are priced up at 8/11 and the bookmakers think that Leeds are their most likely opponents, they are available at 5/4 while Derby are 12/1 to get promoted from the position they are in.
