Cometh the hour, cometh the man, and that was exactly what Cristiano Ronaldo did last night. His team needed him, they paid big bucks for him to lead them to a Champions League trophy last summer, and last night he turned their game against Atletico Madrid into a one man show, dragging his team into the quarter finals to keep their trophy hopes alive.

Juventus went into the game 2-0 down from the first leg after a dismal night in Spain, and they needed something special. Ronaldo scored not only once, but three times to bag a hat trick, and more importantly help his side to the 3-0 victory they needed to qualify for the next round. This was Ronaldo at his very best, and doing all he can to drag his team with him. I don't think Juve played too badly as a team, but Ronaldo turned it into a one man show with his performance.

The 34 year old came in for close to £100 million last summer, and so far fans have seen him play well, but not to the elite level that is expected from him. Last night that changed, and just as we all know, it is the big stage that Ronaldo thrives upon. With the Champions League offering him that stage, expect to see the same again from him next time his team need him in this competition.

After turning around the deficit against Atletico Madrid, Juventus have been promoted to joint second favourites to win the competition with the bookmakers. They are priced up at 7/2 to lift the trophy, alongside Barcelona while the favourites are Manchester City, who scored seven last night past Schalke as they continue to impress.
