It hasn't been easy for Newcastle fans over the past couple of years, and yesterday they received further bad news to make things worse. Manager Rafa Benitez, who has been impressive during his time at the club and built up a good relationship with the fans, will leave at the end of this week after failing to agree a new deal. This is only going to do one thing, and that is create a further divide between owner Mike Ashley and supporters of the club.

Benitez has criticised Ashley during his time at the club for lacking ambition and not spending enough money and it has been reported that Benitez was not happy with the £60 million transfer budget given to him for the upcoming summer. Benitez wanted to spend to ensure that Newcastle became and remained a regular top 10 club for the forseable future.

The big question next is who will take over from Benitez. It would be a huge risk for Ashley to go with a smaller name, as that would upset the fans even more while those with reputations behind them, who the fans would want, are unlikely to come into the club and work under the restraints that Ashley imposes on spending at the club.

Surprisingly the favourite for the job is Jose Mourinho, priced up at 5/1, although there are many other names behind him in the running. They include Mikel Arteta at 7/1, recently sacked Garry Monk at 8/1 and David Moyes, who is looking to get back into football, available at the same price. This is a huge decision for Ashley, and one that could cause further problems for him with the fans.
