QPR Will Try and Use FA Cup Success to Turn Season
QPR are through to the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in over 20 years. The last time they reached this stage was back in 1997, but a comfortable 2-0 victory at home to Portsmouth last night sealed their place in the next round. They go on to face Premier League opponents in the shape of Watford, in a game they will host in just over a week, as they look to make it into the quarter finals.
While the result was an important one to aid their qualification to the next round, it could be exactly what they need to get their Championship season back on track. Not too long ago we were talking about QPR as a potential playoff team after seeing them climb the table at an impressive rate. However, that has all changed recently, and with two draws followed by three defeats in their last five games, there is a lot of work to do to get back into the top half, never mind the playoffs.
After looking like having a chance, QPR are now eight points off the playoffs and only an enormous turnaround would put them back into contention. They will be looking to get back into the top half though, which is a more realistic aim and they are just four points away from 8th position, so a change in fortune could get them up there soon.
A big game awaits QPR on Saturday afternoon as they get back to league action. They are at home to Birmingham, who are one of the teams above them they will be hoping to chase down, and after a momentum boosting win in the FA Cup during midweek, a win here would really get the ball rolling. In what looks like being a close game, the bookmakers have made QPR the favourites on home soil, priced up at 29/20 to take home all three points. A win would be a huge boost to Birmingham's playoff chances, and they are priced up at 2/1 to take the points home.
