The first ever Nations League final has taken place, and Portugal were the first team to get their hands on the trophy. A 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in Sunday's final was enough for them to win it and to make it even sweeter, they hosted it and lifted the trophy in front of a stadium full of their own fans.

This is Portugal's second trophy in the past three years after winning the 2016 European Championships. It will set them up nicely to defend that, in a tournament that starts next summer, and one that could be a final farewell for their star man and captain Cristiano Ronaldo. He was exceptional in the semi final, showing that he is still more than capable of playing at this level and scoring a hat trick in the process. However, in the final he was a lot quieter, which was unusual to see. A lot of that can probably be attributed to Virgil Van Dijk, who was excellent at the heart of the Dutch defence and kept tabs on the Juventus player all game.

Despite winning the 2016 edition and winning the Nations League, Portugal are only 8th best in the betting for the Euro 2020 finals next summer. They are priced up at 16/1, which puts them behind Holland who they have just beaten in the Nations League final and England, who were beaten by Holland in the semi final of the same competition last Thursday.
