After parting ways with Aitor Karanka, Nottingham Forest have quickly moved to appoint a successor, with Martin O'Neill coming in to take charge and try and push Forest to the Premier League. O'Neill is one of the greatest players to ever play for Forest, making close to 400 appearances and helping them lift back to back European titles. He left his role at the Republic Of Ireland back in November, and Forest say that he is fulfilling a life long ambition by returning to the club as manager.

There is no doubt that this will be seen as a popular appointment by them, and one that will really please the fans. With the promotion race in the Championship so tight, uniting behind a manager and pushing forward in the same direction could be the difference between making and missing out on the playoffs. Forest are just four points off the playoffs right now, the job isn't an impossible task for O'Neill, and if he has funds to spend before the end of the month, that is only going to aid his push and take this team in the right direction.

The next few weeks at the top of the Championship table are going to be fascinating, and this is one of the closest promotion races we have ever seen. Realistically, 14 clubs will fancy a chance of gaining promotion at this stage, and Nottingham Forest are one of them. Martin O'Neill has been brought in to try and deliver promotion, and he takes over at a time where the club is certainly in the running, and has every chance of making the promise land.

O'Neill's first game in charge of Forest comes on Saturday and will be at the familiar surroundings of the City Ground. He will no doubt receive a fantastic welcome from the fans after playing so well for the club during his playing days, and that should allow him to get off on the right foot. Forest are favourites to win that game, which takes place against Bristol City, and they are available at 7/5 to take home all three points. Bristol City are above Forest in the league by two points, showing how important this game is and they are available at 21/10 to win the game.
