Liverpool Back at the Top of the Premier League Following Fulham Win
Liverpool took advantage of Manchester City's FA Cup commitments this weekend by moving back to the top of the Premier League table just before the international break. While City were progressing to the semi finals of the FA Cup, Liverpool were winning at Fulham to move back to the top of the table. They have now played a game more than City, but at this stage it is points on the board that matter, and Liverpool are now two ahead of their rivals.
This was far from a vintage Liverpool performance, and they are lacking something over the past few weeks, so there has to be a question as to whether they can last it out and challenge City. However, good teams find a way to get lucky and take home three points even when they haven't been at their best, and you can't argue that Liverpool did that yesterday. They needed a penalty in the last few minutes of the game to take home the points, but they got it, took advantage and sent their fans home happy.
The Premier League breaks due to international games now, so we will not see the teams back in action until the end of the month. While they have played a game more, it will certainly help Liverpool psychologically to know that they are top of the league during this break.
Despite moving back to the top yesterday, Liverpool are still outsiders of the two teams still in the title race. They are priced up at 2/1 to take home the trophy, while current holders City are still very short at 4/11 to win back to back Premier League titles. They return at the end of the month, with City having eight games left to win the title, and Liverpool having one less.
