England Rue Mistakes in Extra Time Loss to Netherlands
England had a very mixed night in Portugal, but ultimately they made basic defensive mistakes which cost them the game against the Netherlands and a place in the Nations League final. They eventually lost the game 3-1, after being ahead right up until the 73rd minute, and from that moment on, their performance went downhill. It was another disappointing semi final for them, and that will surely play on their minds if they are lucky enough to reach the semi finals at the Euro 2020 Championship next summer.
The main culprit was John Stones, who lost the ball on the edge of his own box during extra time to gift a goal to the Netherlands. This was after Stones was criticised for poor marking at a corner, which resulted in the Netherlands equalising earlier in the game. Then the third, which was another defensive error from England, this time Ross Barkley who was stripped on the edge of the box, and when that ball went in the back of the net, it was certainly game over.
This tournament doesn't have the prestige that others do, but it was a chance for England to feel what it is like winning on the international stage. However, this was a very poor performance and now Gareth Southgate has to go back to the drawing board as he looks at both the individual errors and the overall style of his team, before they play the 3rd/4th place game on Sunday against Switzerland.

The English players will now face the dreaded 3rd/4th game, the one that no one really wants to play in. However, England could really do with a performance here to show fans that Thursday was simply a blip. England are favourites to win the game against Switzerland, priced up at 21/20 while Switzerland are available to back at 5/2 to win in 90 minutes.
