Dortmund and Atletico Madrid Locked in Tight Group A Battle
There are just two rounds of games left in the Champions League group stages, and going into those games Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are tied at the top of group A. Both teams go into their last games with nine points on the board after three victories and one defeat. They have each beaten each other and inflicted that defeat, so their head to head record is level. One thing that sets them apart is goal difference, something that is currently in favour of Borussia Dortmund, they have a +6 goal difference compared to the +1 that Atletico Madrid have.
We have to wait a couple of weeks until the teams play again, with November 28 the date when the next round of games take place. On that date, Atletico will get the first chance to lay down a marker, with a home game against bottom club Monaco kicking off at 5:55pm. After they have played, Dortmund take to the field to face Club Brugge, with that game kicking off at 8:00pm. Both teams are expected to win their remaining games, so look out for Atletico trying to rack up a score against Monaco in an attempt to pull back some of the goal difference deficit they currently have.
Many of the Champions League groups have stories going into the final couple of games and group A is certainly one of them. Both Atletico and Dortmund will be happy with qualification, but they will want to lead the group and potentially get an easier tie in the first knockout round. Both teams are huge favourites for their games at the end of November, Atletico are the 2/13 favourites to beat Monaco while Dortmund are the 7/20 favourites to beat Club Brugge. Both teams will want six points from their remaining two games, and should that happen, Dortmund will have the advantage thanks to their currently superior goal difference.
