Derby Turn to Another Big Name to Replace Lampard
It was always looking likely that Frank Lampard would leave Derby for Chelsea and during that period, Derby were clearly preparing for the worst and looking for a new manager. Just a couple of days after losing Lampard, Derby had their man to replace him, and they turned to another big name in the shape of Phillip Cocu, who can only be described as a stalwart of Dutch football.
Like Lampard, Cocu has a brilliant playing resume although he is further into his management career than Lampard was when arriving at Derby as a rookie. Cocu had a very successful spell at PSV before a not so successful one at Fenerbahce, where he was last in charge. He won just three of his first 15 games there though, and was sacked after that run back in October 2018, and has been without a club since then.
The biggest task facing Cocu will be to replace some of the quality that has already left the club due to loans running out. Two of those are at Chelsea with Lampard and you have to hope if you are a Derby fan that Lampard will allow them back to the club if he doesn't see a place for them in his plans. if not, Cocu will have to dive into the transfer market to bring players in, but with just a month until the start of the season he will have to move quickly.
Derby lost out in the playoff final to Aston Villa at the end of last season and won't want to suffer the same heartache again. Can Cocu be the man to guide them to the Premier League? They are priced up at 11/2 to gain promotion to the Premier League by any method next season, while if you think they can win the league they can be backed at a very big 16/1 to achieve that.
