Frank Lampard has turned to a former playing partner and friend in Ashley Cole to add valuable experience to his Derby County squad. The 38 year old left back has a long history of playing with Lampard for both Chelsea and England, and he joins Derby until the end of the season on a short term deal. With plenty of youngsters in the squad, this is clearly a move to bring both quality and experience to the dressing room, and one that could go very well for the club.

Cole has not played so far this year, but did play over 30 games for LA last season in the MLS, which ended back in October so he should arrive in pretty good condition. There is of course a huge difference between playing in the MLS in LA and playing in the Championship, in the north of England during winter, but Cole is a veteran of the game, and has played enough seasons in this country to understand what is coming.

Cole joins at an important time for the club, they are currently in 6th place in the league, holding onto the final playoff spot by two points. That will be the aim for The Rams this season, and someone like Cole who can still play to a high level, but also is someone that has been there and done it before at a much higher level, is going to be an incredibly important addition.

The first game Derby have with Cole in their squad comes this weekend when they play in the FA Cup. They travel to Accrington on Saturday afternoon, and we may get a glimpse of Cole in that game if Lampard feels like it would be a good way to get him involved straight away. It is no surprise to see Derby as the favourites to beat their lower league opposition, and they are priced up at 17/20 to do so. Accrington will fancy an upset though, and they are 16/5 to turn over the Championship club.
