The prize at stake on Sunday for Chalrton and Sunderland is huge, as the two teams head to Wembley to face off in the League One playoff final. The winner will find themselves in the Championship next season, back at the minimum level of where they believe they belong. However, for the loser it is another season in League One, being one of the fallen giants in that league, and another season of pressure on their backs to get promoted.

Just a couple of years ago, Sunderland were playing Premier League football against some of the best players and teams in the world. At the moment they are a League One club, but see a potential road out in front of them with this game. You have to go back further than that to see the last time Charlton played Premier League football, but they have experienced it, and know that they are capable of being higher in the pyramid than the third tier of English football.

While both teams have experienced players, something that does favour Sunderland here is that they have already been to Wembley once this season for the Checkatrade Trophy final. Portsmouth came out on top that day on penalties, but Sunderland will have learnt from the experience and that should help them to manage their game better, especially in the early stages.

The bookmakers make Sunderland the slight favourites to win this game on Sunday and they are priced up at 6/4 to win in 90 minutes. Charlton are not too far behind them, available at 19/10 while the draw which means extra time and possibly penalties, is priced up at 11/5. Those prices show the bookmakers think it will be a very close game, and it is hard to disagree with that assessment.
