All Eyes on Lampard and Mourinho Clash at Old Trafford
Two friends collide tonight in a Carabao Cup game at Old Trafford when Derby County and Frank Lampard travel to face Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. Lampard is taking his first steps into management and so far has taken to it well, guiding Derby to sit in the playoff positions right now. This is certainly the biggest test of his career so far, and while he is good friends with Mourinho, he would love nothing more than to get one over on his old boss and make a big early statement in his managerial career.
While Lampard will be tested more over the coming weeks and months, especially if Derby are near the top of the table, he probably won't have a stage like this one to promote himself. Just a few months into his reign at Derby he has the opportunity to visit Old Trafford and show what he can do. The Carabao Cup is often a great leveller for smaller clubs, with the big guns usually resting a number of key players.
That is exactly what I think will happen here, Manchester United play in the Premier League at the weekend, and then they are back in Champions League action next week. Players like Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba amongst others are almost certainly going to be rested here. I don't think Derby will do the same, I think Lampard will want his best eleven on the field, and I think his best eleven will have all told him they want the opportunity to play at Old Trafford.
Ahead of the big game tonight, bookmakers make Manchester United overwhelming favourites to win the tie. They are priced up at 1/6, while those who fancy an upset and a win for Frank Lampard can back Derby at a huge 14/1. The draw in 90 minutes is something else to be considered here, and that is available at 23/4 for punters who think this could go the distance.
