Diego Costa has been excluded from Chelsea’s 24-man Champions League group stage squad after failing to seal a move away from the club in the summer.

The 28-year-old has been angling for a move since the end of last season, after Antonio Conte informed the Spain international that he was no longer part of his plans moving forward via text message.

Costa was keen to seal a move to former club Atletico Madrid - despite them not being able to sign and register players until January - but a deal failed to materialise and is still expected to return to Chelsea.

The La Liga outfit will likely return for their man in the new year but the Blues are holding out for a fee close to £50m.

Eden Hazard is currently on international duty with Belgium while Costa remains in Brazil with family and the 2015 PFA Player of the Year has revealed he is hoping his eccentric teammate will soon return to the club.

"Diego and I have been playing together for three years, we have won everything together except for the Champions League," he told Spanish outlet Marca.

"It's a pleasure to play with him, he's a top player and a top person. I would like to see him come back, but I don't make the decisions.

"I hope he can find a solution so that we can see him back on the pitch soon."

Despite failing to make the cut for Chelsea’s European campaign, he is part of their 25-man squad for the Premier League season, as they look to avoid making him cup-tied for the Champions League knockout stages should he seal a move away in January.

Chelsea are considering taking legal action against Costa should he fail to report back to the club and work his way back towards full fitness under their guidance.

Chelsea Champions League squad:
