Brighton & Hove Albion agree club-record deal for Jose Izquierdo
The Premier League new-boys Brighton & Hove Albion have agreed terms over a club-record deal for Club Brugge’s winger Jose Izquierdo. This is the third time this summer Brighton are breaking their transfer record after the signings of the Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan from Valencia for £5.2m and Davy Propper from PSV Eindhoven for €13 million.
It is understood that the Seagulls’ representatives met with the player last night in a restaurant in Belgium to finalise the transfer and Brighton followed this up with a Twitter post to confirm that personal terms had been agreed. His deal is subject to a medical, which has been scheduled for Thursday and a work permit being granted. According to reports, the Seagulls would pay the Belgian club an initial £13.5m with add-ons potentially taking the total value up to £16 million.
The 25-year-old Colombian International has played a vital part in Club Brugge’s performances last term as he managed to score 15 goals in the Belgian top tier. Overall, he has scored 34 goals in 84 appearances for Club Brugge and he was called up by Colombia in June to play against the likes of Cameroon and Spain.
“Jose is someone we have been aware of for some time, and he has been one of the standout players in the Belgian league over the past three years,” manager Chris Hughton told the club’s official website.
“Jose has good experience with almost 250 senior games in both Colombia and Belgium and has played in the Europa League, Champions League and international football, having made his debut for his national team this summer.”
Brighton & Hove Albion will begin their Premier League adventure with a difficult home fixture against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday. You can find all of our Premier League predictions and betting tips here and feel free to check the latest news and best football betting tips.
