Australian Open 2018 WTA Final - Simona Halep vs Caroline Wozniacki betting preview
Simona Halep will face Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday morning in Melbourne in the final of the WTA Australian Open 2018. Both players have come through great adversity to reach this stage of the competition, with both saving several match points on route to the Final. It’s a winner-takes-all final, as neither of these two players have won a Grand Slam title and both are competing in their third Grand Slam final.
Simona Halep tips and predictions
Simona Halep had a difficult route through the final here in Melbourne, especially after she rolled her ankle in her opening round victory. Then, Simona had to survive an almost four-hour epic clash that went 15-13 in the final set against the American Lauren Davis. Halep followed up the Davis’ victory with two comfortable wins against Karolina Pliskova and Naomi Osaka. Then, the Romanian player had an epic match against the 2016 Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber in the Semi-finals. It was one of the most intense Australian Open Semi-finals of the past decade. Halep sprinted into a 6-3, 3-1 lead against Kerber, but the German player fought back. Halep had the chance to seal out the tie with two match points in hand at 5-4 in the third set, but the German fought back again. However, the Romanian finally prevailed in 2hr and 20 min with some incredible shots in the last 10 minutes of the game. Simona Halep is currently the World No.1 in the WTA rankings and needs a victory here in order to maintain this position. Furthermore, she is still looking for her first Grand Slam title after she wasted a great opportunity in the French Open final against Ostapenko.
Caroline Wozniacki predictions and tips
Meanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki had a far more comfortable route to the final. She started the Australian Open with two easy victories against Buzarnescu and Fett and then defeated out-of-form Kiki Bertens and Rybarikova. In the quarter-finals, Wozniacki struggled a little bit in her 1-2 win over Suarez Navarro and then beat in-form Elise Mertens in straight sets in the Semi-finals. In her victory against the Belgian, Caroline won 76% of her first serve points and 62% of her second serve points. This is Wozniacki’s third Grand Slam final, but she failed to convert any of these chances. The Dane should feel confident ahead of this clash as she have won the last three meetings with Halep across all surfaces. Her most recent match against Halep was the London Finals towards the end of October, ending with Caroline losing just two games.
Betting predictions and odds
This final will be only the 17th time in Australian Open history that the top two seeds of the WTA rankings will meet for the title. Simona Halep showed clearly that her head is totally in the right place in her Semi-finals tie against Keber. If she can replicate that form from the last 15 minutes of the game, then she will lift the title here. On the other hand, Wozniacki have served pretty well throughout the tournament, but she also looked solid at the back.
It’s a difficult call and it will definitely be plenty of breaks in this contest. I fancy a high-scoring affair here, but at the end of the day, I think that Simona Halep deserves this title after her impressive performance against Kerber yesterday.
